Cocktail Hour: Blackberry Manhattan Recipe

On Tuesday, I reviewed the Driftless Glen Single Barrel Straight Rye and told you I would use it in a cocktail and give you the results. I'm excited to share with you the delicious cocktail recipe that I used it in! This cocktail combines the classic Manhattan with a twist of blackberry flavor supplied by a homemade Blackberry Simple Syrup. Let's dive into the world of mixology and explore the Blackberry Manhattan!

Classic Manhattan

The Manhattan is a timeless cocktail that dates back to the late 19th century. It is a sophisticated and elegant drink that typically consists of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. Garnished with a cherry, the Manhattan is a staple in the world of cocktails and is known for its rich and complex flavors.

Blackberry Manhattan

To add a fruity and vibrant twist to the classic Manhattan, let me introduce the Blackberry Manhattan. This variation combines the traditional ingredients of a Manhattan with the sweetness and tartness of fresh blackberries. Here's how you can make your own Blackberry Manhattan:

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey (I prefer rye.)

  • 1 oz sweet vermouth (Martini & Rossi Rosso)

  • 1/2 oz blackberry simple syrup*

  • A couple dashes of aromatic bitters (Angostura)

  • Fresh blackberries for garnish

*I used this recipe for the simple syrup: https://www.forkinthekitchen.com/blackberry-simple-syrup/

Instructions:

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice, add the whiskey, sweet vermouth, blackberry simple syrup, and the aromatic bitters to the mixing glass.

  2. Stir well to chill and combine the ingredients.

  3. Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass. I prefer a coupe.

  4. Garnish with fresh blackberries on a cocktail pick.

The Blackberry Manhattan offers a delightful balance of flavors, with the sweetness of blackberries complementing the richness of the Driftless Glen Rye and bitters. It's the perfect cocktail for whiskey lovers looking to explore new and creative drink options, and may even be a gateway to whiskey for your friends and family who prefer sweet cocktails.

Next time you're in the mood for a classic cocktail with a fruity twist, give the Blackberry Manhattan a try. Cheers to mixing up your cocktail game with this refreshing and flavorful drink!
