When it comes to whiskey, few things excite me more than a unique finish, and Driftless Glen's Port-Barrel Finished Bourbon delivers an intriguing experience. Back in September of last year, I had the opportunity to visit the Driftless Glen Distillery in Baraboo, WI (you can read all about that trip and a little bit about the distillery here).
Appearance
The first thing that strikes me is its captivating colorâa dark amber transitioning beautifully to red when it catches the light. It's a visual prelude to the richness that lies ahead.
Nose
On the nose, this bourbon is a decadent treat. Strong cocoa notes mingle with the lush aroma of dark cherries, followed by a hint of caramel. Just as Iâm settling into this sweet symphony, a brief hint of black pepper makes its presence known, adding an unexpected layer of intrigue.
Palate
The mouthfeel is thick and creamy, coating my palate with sweetness that echoes the nose. Black cherries and plums take the forefront, their juicy richness balanced by the reemergence of cocoa and a surprising kick of black pepper. The hint of caramel weaves through, tying these flavors together with a subtle sweetness.
Finish
The finish is medium and dry, but not without its surprises. A bold blast of black pepper asserts itself, leaving a lingering note of berry on the palate. It's a finish that keeps me thinking long after the last sip.
For those who enjoy wine finishes, as I do, there's much to savor in this bourbon. The interplay of berry and cocoa is particularly pleasant, creating a harmonious balance that keeps me coming back for more. The level of black pepper was a bit surprisingâmore pronounced than the nose suggestedâbut it adds an exciting twist to the experience.
While Driftless Glen's Port-Barrel Finished Bourbon is a delightful pour, I can't help but wonder what a touch more proof might do to elevate its complexity even further. Regardless, it's a worthy addition to any whiskey enthusiast's collection. With its intriguing profile and satisfying finish, I rate it a solid 3.9 out of 5 âïžs.
Keep sippinâ, my friends!đ„
