🥃Matured for 5+ years 🥃Made from a mashbill of 75% Rye and 25% Malted Barley

🥃Bottle procured for $50 from the local Total Wine & More

🥃Tasted using a Glencairn Whiskey Tasting Glass

Back in September of last year, I had the opportunity to visit the Driftless Glen Distillery in Baraboo, WI (you can read all about that trip and a little bit about the distillery in my post "A Trip to Wisconsin"). While I couldn't buy a bottle then, I did enjoy their offerings. So, imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this bottle at my local Total Wine this weekend!

This rye whiskey is good, no doubt about it. Although it doesn't reach the heights of greatness, it still manages to impress. Clocking in at under 100 proof, it boasts a complexity that rivals higher-proof ryes.

Let's dive into the details, shall we?

Nose

The Driftless Glen greets you with a curious mix of scents - hints of root beer and mint mingle with the bold warmth of rye spice. Unexpected notes of grape bubblegum and cocoa powder bring a playful touch, hinting at a whiskey that dares to be different.

Palate

Upon the first sip, you're met with a comforting demerara sweetness reminiscent of dark sugar cane. The palate then transitions to refreshing bubble mint gum before a fiery burst of cinnamon red hots kicks in. A finish of dark chocolate adds a sophisticated bitterness to round out the taste.

Finish

The finish is where this rye excels. It's long and satisfying, showcasing the whiskey's quality. Dry oak provides a sturdy backbone, while black pepper and cinnamon offer a spicy warmth that lingers.

In conclusion, the Driftless Glen Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey is a solid choice for those seeking a rye with character. At 96 proof, it's easy to sip and invites you to sit back, relax, and savor the moment. While it may not be the pinnacle of whiskey perfection, it's definitely worth a try for those looking for a unique journey in every glass.

I think this rye would be great in a cocktail! So, on Thursday, I'll share a new cocktail recipe using it and report the results.
