Brand History
Wild Turkey 101 has a rich and storied history that is deeply intertwined with the evolution of American bourbon. The brand traces its roots back to the 19th century, when a distillery was established on the site of the Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. However, the name "Wild Turkey" came into existence in the 1940s.
The story goes that in 1940, Thomas McCarthy, an executive at Austin Nichols (which was then a wholesale grocery and spirits company), took some warehouse samples of bourbon on a wild turkey hunting trip with friends. The bourbon was such a hit that his friends began requesting "that wild turkey bourbon," and thus the Wild Turkey brand was born.
Wild Turkey 101 itself is known for its distinctive proofâ101 proof, or 50.5% alcohol by volume. This higher proof allows for a robust flavor profile, which has been a key factor in its enduring popularity. The bourbon is characterized by its use of a high rye content in the mash bill, which contributes to its bold and spicy notes.
The brand has been under the stewardship of the Russell family for decades, with Jimmy Russell, known as the "Buddha of Bourbon," serving as a master distiller for over 60 years. His son, Eddie Russell, also a master distiller, joined him in leading the brand, ensuring that the traditional methods and quality associated with Wild Turkey continue.
Over the years, Wild Turkey 101 has cemented its place as a staple in the bourbon world, appreciated both for its quality and its affordability. It remains a favorite among both casual bourbon drinkers and aficionados, celebrated for its rich history and its consistently robust and flavorful profile.
My Thoughts
In my early whiskey days, Wild Turkey 101 was a bottle I wanted to love but just couldn't connect with. At the time, I couldn't pinpoint why. It made a great Old Fashioned, but I just didnât like it neat.
Fast forward to today, in possession of a more developed palate, I'm revisiting this classic bourbon to see if my opinion has changed.
Nose
As I take in the aromas, I'm greeted by a delightful blend of orange peel and cherry, intertwined with rich caramel and a sprinkle of cinnamon. There's a subtle hint of oak that grounds the sweeter notes, while a touch of mint and black pepper adds an intriguing complexity.
Palate
The first sip reveals a silky mouthfeel that sets the stage for a flavor journey. It begins with a sweet introduction that quickly gives way to bold spice notes, dominated by cinnamon and nutmeg. As it develops, a sumptuous caramel nut profile emerges, adding depth and richness to the experience.
Finish
The finish is where Wild Turkey 101 truly shines. It leaves a lingering peanut essence and a long, resonant blast of cinnamon thatâll keep me coming back for more.
Reflecting on my earlier experiences, it's clear that my palate has evolved over the years. I honestly can't fathom why I didn't appreciate Wild Turkey 101 back then. It's a true budget banger that delivers complexity and satisfaction. At this price point, I foresee many more bottles of this in my future!
